League Guide

A guide to the set up of the Northern League

League Structure

The exact structure of the league varies from season to season depending on the number of teams involved. Generally however, teams will play each other twice per season (three times if the league comprises less than seven teams).

Matches take place in monthly meetings of all the teams in which each team plays between two and three matches. There are usually 5 such meetings per season, with other monthly meetings being used for various cup competitions. These meetings are held either in Dundee or Glenrothes, as these are roughly central to the competing teams.

3 points are awarded for a win, 1 for a draw and 0 for a loss. The team finishing the league season with the most points is declared Northern League Champions. At present there is a play-off system in Scotland, although this is not currently used to decide the league championship.
