Balwearie Inter-Club Game

(30.04.10)

Balwearie Thunder took on the Balwearie Lightning side at both teams training ground, Kirkland High School. The final match of the season meant that with a win, the Lightning side could overtake the Chiefs on points whereas conversly, the result had no real significance in terms of league standing for Thunder. Lightning played well in the first period, only conceding 1 goal. Unfortunatly, the Lightning team couldn't continue the impressive run of form as Thunder found another 3 goals from the slot in the second period. The final period saw Thunder score another 2 goals with only 1 consolation goal coming from the Lightning side. The final result 6-1 to Thunder.

Speedhoc League Winners After T4

(05.04.10)

The day kicked off with an inter club game between the Chapel Chiefs and Speedhoc Chapel. The Chapel Chiefs side looked strong with a few new players to bolster the side and this new found power was demonstrated in the 6th minute when the Chiefs took a 1-0 lead over Speedhoc. The Chiefs were unable to hold onto the lead and Speedhoc retaliated with another 2 goals in the first period and two early goals in the second period. With the scoreline at 4-1, the Chiefs refused to finish the game lying down and two goals from ex Dundee player Mike Forbes saw a close match with only 1 goal seperating the two teams. The remaining 12 minutes of the game saw the Chiefs come close to equalising but Speedhoc continued to shut them down, finishing the game with a 4-3 victory.

The second game of the day saw a short benched Balwearie Thunder side take on the Aberdeen Oilers. Thunder only had 4 players available to play prompting Lightning player Chris McNab to move up the ranks into Thunder for the day. The first period saw Thunder tire against a superb Oilers squad and concede 2 goals. With the arrival of 2 more Thunder players for the second period, confusion ensued over player positioning and this lead to Thunder conceding another 6 goals with only Paul Walker grabbing a goal for Thunder. The final period was much better from Thunder who were a lot more organised and managed to stem the Aberdeen scoring with the loss of 1 goal. The final result saw Aberdeen run out 9-1 winners.

Next up saw the Chapel Chiefs take on Edinburgh Eagles. The Edinburgh Eagles kicked off the scoring with 2 goals against the Chiefs in the first period in what was to become an extremely tight game. Once again the Chiefs refused to lie down against the Eagles and grabbed a goal early in the second period. The Eagles kept the 2 goal margin with another goal in the second but were unable to contain the Chiefs opposition who managed to level the playing field with 2 goals in the third period. Both teams were unable to break the deadlock from this point onwards and the final score finished a 3-3 draw.

Balwearie Lightning faced off against Speedhoc in the 4th game of the day and again there was no doubt in anybodys mind who was going to win this game. Lightning have seen at least 6 new players come through the Balwearie doors this season showing the increasing popularity of Floorball in this country. The first period started with Speedhoc scoring 5 goals, followed by a painful second period with Lightning conceding another 6. The final period saw a tired Lightning side lose another 9 goals leading to a Speedhoc win of 20-0.

Game 5 saw the continuation of the second half of Aberdeen Oilers against Edinburgh Eagles which was abandoned at half time during T2. The Oilers needed a win in this match to keep their league cup hopes alive but from the outset they were facing a 2 goal deficit as Edinburgh led 3-1. A quick goal from Aberdeen saw them a step closer to levelling the match and a glimmer of light came from Mike Kanda who scored the equaliser only to find the goal disallowed. Things were eventually going Aberdeens way when Honza Felcman scored the equaliser but alas Edinburgh retained the 2 goal lead only minutes later. Another Aberdeen goal took them a step away once again but Edinburgh retaliated with a goal of their own. A final goal from Aberdeen saw them fall a goal short of levelling the game and finishing the match 6-5 Edinburgh, quashing their hopes of winning the league.

A tired Edinburgh Eagles side continued to play on to the next game against Balwearie Thunder who started the game a less productive than originally expected. The first period saw Edinburgh take the lead by 3 and the second period saw them extend the lead by another 2. The final period saw Thunder come out swinging and earn a more respectable scoreline after picking up 2 goals. Edinburgh added only 1 more to their tally, ending the match 6-2.

Aberdeen looked to sour the experience of the league win against Speedhoc in the next match which saw both teams give no less than their all. The match also saw the return of Speedhoc's Paul McMaster who was ruled out of action for most of the season after sustaining an injury to the achilles tendon. Aberdeen started the game in terrific form as they scored 4 goals in the first period and whilst Speedhoc could only add 1 to the scoreline. A heated match ensued with as many penalties as there were goals. Speedhoc managed to claw back the majority of the deficit to see them only 1 goal from equalising as the score sat 6-5 to Aberdeen. The final period saw the same story as 5 penalties were conceded between the two clubs and only 3 goals scored. 2 goals came from the Aberdeen side whilst only 1 goal came from the Speedhoc end. The final score saw Aberdeen win the game 7-6.

Chapel Chiefs took on the Edinburgh Eagles for the second time in a day as they played the second last game of T4. Chiefs were looking to capitalise on the 3-3 draw from earlier and started well with a 2-1 lead after 6 minutes in. Unfortunatly, the Chiefs were unable to hold the Eagles at bay and conceded another 2 by the end of the period. The second period saw Edinburgh score another 4 without any answer back from the Chiefs. A consolation goal in the third period for the Chiefs was shadowed by another 4 Eagles goals, finishing the game 12-3.

The last game of the day saw Balwearie Lightning look to put the last game to rest and start anew against the Aberdeen Oilers side. In true Balwearie form, the game was played in the true spirit of Floorball but Lightning were unable to find the net once. No penalties were conceded by either team and the final score saw Aberdeen run out the winners with an easy 12-0 win.

Balwearie Thunder and Balwearie Lightning are still to play each other in their final game of the season which will potentially take place in 2 weeks time during a Balwearie training session. Although Thunder can't move position in the league, Lightning can still avoid final place with a win which would see them jump the Chiefs in the league table. More details to follow.

Gap Widens At The Top After T5

(29.03.10)

The first game of the day saw Balwearie Lightning take on Balwearie Thunder in their first meeting since the first game of the season. The first goal of the day came from Graeme Heggie and a disallowed goal from Niall Handyside saw Thunder only 1-0 up after the first period. An early goal from Alan Campbell in the second period was quickly answered back by Daryl Keddie to take the game to 2-1. Unfortunatly, the Lightning side couldn't keep up the pressure and 2 more goals from Alan Campbell and 1 from Paul Walker saw the game finish 5-1 to Thunder.

Game 2 saw the top two teams (Aberdeen and Speedhoc) in the Northern League go to head to head. Scoring opened up with Honza Flecman and Mike Kanda from the Aberdeen team. These two goals were quickly equalised by Shaun Gear and Mike Induch of Speedhoc. Another goal from Speedhoc saw them take the lead but another Aberdeen goal saw the game level. A succession of 3 more goals from Speedhoc opened up a large gap between the two teams and only 1 more goal from Aberdeen took the game to 6-4. One more goal from Speedhoc took them to 7-4 and another 3 points higher in the league.

Next up saw Edinburgh Eagles take on Balwearie Thunder in a mid table battle. Two goals from Edinburgh were quickly clawed back by Thunder's Graeme Heggie. The Thunder side seemed to run out of steam as Edinburgh scored 7 back to back goals before Graeme Heggie finished his hat-trick for Thunder. Another 3 goals from Edinburgh saw them run out the winners 12-3. Well done to Sampo Ryynanen who scored 4 goals for the Edinburgh side and Sam Granlund who also tallied 4 goals for Edinburgh.

Chapel Chiefs up against Speedhoc Chapel next in a game that saw Speedhoc take an early 3-0 lead over the short benched Chiefs. The Chiefs showed some fight with two goals from Stevie Barrie and Chris Suttie to take them within equalising distance of Speedhoc. Chapel Chiefs fell away towards the end of the second period to another 2 Speedhoc goals and the third period saw them rolled over with another 3. The final result 8-2 Speedhoc.

The next game is another game that Balwearie Lightning would like to forget about quickly as Aberdeen tried to catch up with Speedhoc's vast goal difference. Four goals to Aberdeen in the first was enough to demoralise the Lightning side. Another four in the second period and another 6 in the third saw Lightning beat 14-0.

Balwearie Thunder up next against the Chapel Chiefs in a display that was probably Thunder's best to date. Three goals in the first period gave Thunder a wide lead and this was followed up with another 4 goals in the second. The Chiefs' Chris Suttie managed to get 1 goal in the second and 1 goal in the 3rd but Thunder put in another 6 goals to finish the game 11-2 with Graeme Heggie collecting his second hat-trick of the day and Alan Campbell collecting four goals.

Edinburgh Eagles next against Speedhoc Chapel in a game that saw Edinburgh looking to right the wrongs of the last meeting. In an end to end game, only two goals were scored. Both goals went to Speedhoc Chapel through the efforts of Mike Induch and Jim Bridger. The final result finished 2-0 Speedhoc.

The second last game of the day saw Chapel Chiefs take on Aberdeen Oilers. In a hard fought game, the short benched Chiefs side managed to suppress the Aberdeen forwards to minimise the scorline. No goals for the Chiefs and 5 from Aberdeen saw Aberdeen take an easy 5-0 win.

The final game of the day was another game the Lightning side would like to forget as they took on the Edinburgh Eagles. The game was played in two 20 minute halfs which saw Edinburgh leading 6-0 after the first half and another 7 in the second half meant Edinburgh finished clear winners, 13-0.

Two Northern League Players Selected For GB Squad

(29.03.10)

Congratulations to Jim Bridger and Simon Baker from Speedhoc Chapel who were both selected to play for the GB team. On behalf of the Northern League, we wish them continued success with the national side.

Fixture Changes

(29.03.10)

Due to the GB national side playing during T4, the NL commitee has taken the decision to postpone T4. T5 will be played on March 7th, followed by T4 on April 4th. The playoffs will be rescheduled to another date which is currently pending consideration.

Edinburgh Eagles Win The 2010 Winter Cup

(29.03.10)

The first game of the day saw Balwearie Lightning take on a short benched Edinburgh Eagles side. An extremely clean game ensued with 8 goals coming from the Edinburgh side and only 1 consolation goal from the Lighting side through a wonderful solo effort by Rene Swift. Edinburgh progressed to the next stages after the 8-1 win

The next game saw the return of the Dundee Northern Lights against the Chapel Chiefs. Dundee possibly had the largest bench of the day and played to their strengths to show that although they are no longer in the league, they are still a force to be reckoned with. Chapel Chiefs took the lead in the first period but couldn't find away to supress the Dundee attack who quickly equalised. A heated match followed with 4 penaltys being conceded. 3 from Dundee and 1 from the Chiefs. Dundee capatilised with a shorthanded goal to lead 2-1 . A quick Dundee goal took the game to 3-1 but a goal from Duncan Vincent took the Chiefs within equalising distance. Unfortunatly for Chiefs, Dundee sealed the game with another 2 goals, finishing the game 5-2.

The next game saw a short benched Aberdeen side take on the Balwearie Thunder team. A goal in the first minute saw Aberdeen take the lead thorugh Daniel Walti but a determined Thunder side eventually hit the net with young forward Graeme Heggie. Graeme continued his impressive run of form with a hat-trick which meant the Thunder side conquered with a 3-1 win.

Dundee took on Edinburgh in the first game of the second stages. The Edinburgh team took a strong 4-0 lead in the first period of the game with only 1 goal coming from the Dundee side. Another goal from both sides in the second period kept the gap level and it was only at the end of the second period that Edinburgh scored 1 more goal. The final result was 6-2 Edinburgh.

Speedhoc Chapel gained a bye due to Ayr Raiders being unable to travel in the heavy snow around Scotland. Therfore, Speedhoc played their first game against Balwearie Thunder in the second stages of the competition. Speedhoc took a 2-0 lead after the first period and another goal in the second saw the side take a comfortable 3-0 lead. A goal by Thunder forward Danny McVee narrowed the gap but any hope of a comeback were crushed by another 2 Speedhoc goals. The final result saw Speedhoc cruise into the final off the back of a 5-1 win.

The next game saw the battle of the two losing squads in the initial competition stages. Balwearie Lightning took on the Chapel Chiefs in what was another highly contested rivalry. Colin Bell started the scoring but was quickly followed up by an equaliser from the Chiefs' Chris Suttie. Chris McNab from Balwearie Lightning scored to take Lighting 2-1 up with only 30 seconds of the period left to play. Chris Suttie equalised again early in the second period and then another goal meant the Chiefs took the lead for the first time in the match. Another Chris Suttie goal saw the Chiefs leading 4-2 but a goal from Stefan Schmelz took Lighting to a goal within equalising distance. A solo effort by Chris Suttie took the Chiefs to a 5-3 lead and a goal by Lightning's Neil McCallum in the final second of the match saw the game at 5-4. Needless to say, the scoreline stayed the same and a tremendous effort by Chris Suttie (scoring all 5 of the Chiefs goals) saw the Chiefs come out on top.

The Winter Cup final was between the Edinburgh Eagles and Speedhoc Chapel. These teams have always had tough encounters with each other and this game was no different. The first goal of the game came from Speedhoc's Scott Ferguson. Edinburgh quickly followed up with 3 goals to take a lead with a little breathing space to spare. Chris Smith of Speedhoc put Chapel within a goals difference of equalising. Another goal saw Edinburgh maintain the 2 goal margin. Another 2 goals from Edinburgh and 1 from Chapel saw Edinburgh stave off the Chapel offense and take the cup with a 6-3 win.

Congratulations to the Edinburgh Eagles who played with the shortest bench of the day and took home the 2010 Winter Cup!!

Speedhoc Still Lead After T3

(29.03.10)

The first game of the day saw Balwearie Lightning take on the league leaders Speedhoc Chapel. There was no doubt in anybodys mind that this was going to be a one sided game with Speedhoc running the game out as winners, 14-1.

The next game would be a tough fight between the Balwearie Thunder side and a newly strengthened Chapel Chiefs. The Chiefs added some experience to their squad with the addition of Speedhoc Captain Ross McEwan, an ex Chapel player, #98 Michael Kane and an ex Balwearie to Chapel player, Scott Westland. The Chiefs started the scoring through Craig Savage in the first period but Thunder answered back quickly through Balwearie's Alan Campbell. Balwearie kept the pressure on with another goal from forward Paul Walker before the Chiefs took another goal to equalise through Scott Westland. The final period saw Michael Kane take the Chiefs to victory with a goal in the 32nd minute.

Game 3 saw the first battle of the day between the top teams. Aberdeen took on Edinburgh in a highly contested game. With both teams playing well defensively, it wasn't until the end of the second period that the deadlock was broken with Edinburgh taking the lead 1-0. Another 2 goals from Edinburgh came quickly in the 3rd period and with no more scoring, Edinburgh saw the game out 3-0.

Balwearie Thunder got off to a flying start against Speedhoc in game 4 which saw them take the lead after 10 minutes into the first half. A minute later though, Speedhoc answered back through the solo efforts of Jim Bridger. Balwearie's Craig Hunter seized an opportunity to take the lead only 30 seconds after the Speedhoc goal taking Balwearie to 2-1. Unfortunatly, Balwearie could not keep up the pace with a flurry of Speedhoc goals coming in the second and third period. A consolation goal saw Balwearie lose the game 8-3.

Next up saw Lightning step up against the refreshed Chiefs side. Lightning took the lead after 3 minutes through defensman Rene Swift. This was followed by a Chiefs powerplay which they could not capitalise on. The Chiefs equalised, followed by a Lightning powerplay and then Chiefs powerplay which again saw no goals. The dealbreaker saw Ross McEwan score with only 5 seconds left in the second period. A tired Lightning side saw the game laid to rest in the 3rd period by Michael Kane. Final result 3-1 Chiefs.

The most entertaining game of the day saw Speedhoc Chapel take on the Edinburgh Eagles in a hard fought match. The end of the second period saw Edinburgh leading the match 4-0 and it wasn't until the third period Speedhoc made their comeback run. Two quick goals saw Speedhoc put Edinburgh on the back foot and a goal by Jim Bridger saw Speedhoc within a goals difference of catching Edinburgh with only 17 seconds left in the game. The following 17 seconds were fought hard by both teams with Speedhoc going on an all out offensive. With 4 seconds left in the match, Shaun Gear scored the equalising goal much to the delight of Speedhoc. A very disappointed Edinburgh left the match with a 4-4 draw.

After Thunder's disappointing result against Speedhoc, they were looking to take the challenge to Aberdeen in the 7th game of the day. The first period saw Aberdeen take a 4 goal lead, a defecit that would be difficult for any team to overcome. The second period saw 2 more goals coming from the Aberdeen side and by the final period saw 1 consolation goal from the Balwearie side, followed by another 2 Aberdeen goals. The end result saw Aberdeen win 8-1.

Another tough game ahead for Balwearie Lightning as they took on the Edinburgh Eagles, fresh off their 4-4 draw with Speedhoc. Edinburgh begun the scoring after only 4 minutes into the first period. A fantastic solo effort by Lightning rookie, Chris McNab, levelled the game 1-1. Lightning couldn't keep the pressure on unfortunatly and a barrage of Edinburgh goals saw Lightning down 7-1. Two more Lightning goals from rookie Calum Ware and Neil McCallum, saw Lightning claw a few goals back. One final goal from Edinburgh saw them finish the winners 8-3.

The final game of the day saw Chapel Cheifs take on Aberdeen Oilers. A good clean with only two penaltys saw Aberdeen score four goals straight in what was a 4-0 win.

Salming Academy Representative Visits Scotland

(06.12.09)

Saturday 21st November saw Salming Academy representative, Patrik Lonell, visit the Balwearie team for a training session in shooting. Patrik's "Shooting School" taught the players the correct techniques for a wide range of shots from different areas of the rink. The session was very hands on with Patrik giving demonstrations before the Balwearie players lined up and had a go themselves.

The turnout for the day was great with most players making an appearence in order to get the most from this fantastic opportunity. After the training session, each member received a certificate from Patrik to show their participation and to remind them of what they had covered during the day.

Patrik was particularly impressed with the teams determination, motivation and commitment at the session. Unfortunately, this was not enough to convince Patrik to sign for the Balwearie squad for the rest of the season.

If there are any teams who would like to benefit from Patriks knowledge, Patrik's website can be found here. This is a worthwhile opportunity for the Northern League and one which the Balwearie team will definitly testify to.

Title Race Hots Up After T2

(19.11.09)

Another great day's floorball in Dundee saw the Speedhoc Chapel team win all three of their games and snatch the Northern League top spot from Aberdeen Oilers on goal difference.

The first match of the day saw the two Chapel teams go head to head for the first time this season. Speedhoc kicked the day off with a bang which was reflected in the 9-1 scoreline and a comfortable three points.

Next up was a "David and Goliath" story as Balwearie Lightning took on the Aberdeen Oilers. Despite a valient effort from the Lightning team, the vast number of Oilers players proved too much for Lightning as they struggled to hit the net. The final score, an easy 8-0 victory for the Oilers.

Following the Lightning game, Balwearie Thunder stepped up against the Edinburgh Eagles. This was a highly anticipated and tough match for both clubs. Edinburgh took an early 1-0 lead which Thunder quickly replied to through forward Danny McVee. Another two goals before the first interval made the game an uphill struggle for Thunder and Edinburgh soon followed up with another three taking the final result to 6-1.

The next game was a harsh lesson in floorball for the Balwearie Lightning team and a game they will want to forget about quickly. Speedhoc Chapel reduced the Lightning team to a 21-1 defeat, sending a message throughout the Northern League that the title is still up for grabs.

Balwearie Thunder squared up against the Aberdeen Oilers in the next game. After a hard fought game, two Aberdeen goals late in the first period put the Thunder team on the back foot. Another two for Aberdeen in the second saw a final scoreline of 4-0.

Next up saw the Edinburgh Eagles take on the Chapel Chiefs. After a 3-2 lead to Edinburgh in the first, the game still looked up for grabs. Unfortunately another four goals in the second and three in the third period proved too much for the Chiefs as Edinburgh finished the game 11-2.

Another highly anticipated game as Balwearie squared up against Speedhoc Chapel. Unfortunately, Thunder failed to get into the flow of the game and once again Speedhoc played with no less than 110% effort which was reflected in the 12-0 scoreline.

The second last game of the day saw Balwearie Lightning take on the Chapel Chiefs in a game where three points were highly sought after on both sides. An early 1-0 lead to the Chiefs was quickly evened up by Lightning's Neil McCallum but before long, the Chiefs had the upper hand again. Two more goals from Lighning saw them take the lead for the first time in the match before Bob Paterson dealt the final blow - another 4-2 win for Lightning over the Chiefs.

The last game of the day saw Edinburgh Eagles go head to head with Aberdeen Oilers in what would be a tough match for both teams. Unfortunately, due to time constraints, the second half of the match won't be played until T3. The scoreline will pick up from T2 which is a 3-1 lead to the Eagles.

Roll-on match day 3!

Oilers top after T1

(05.10.09)

After an exciting day's floorball in Glenrothes, Aberdeen Oilers were the only team to win all three games and top the league ahead of Speedhoc Chapel and Thunder by 3 points.

The first match of the season was a repeat of last season's opener with the two Balwearie teams squaring up. However this year it was a closer affair with Lightning looking stronger than in previous seasons. Thunder nonetheless ran out 4-2 winners.

Next up was Speedhoc Chapel against Edinburgh Eagles in what was a very closely matched game with the difference only coming from the Eagles conceding some soft goals and losing out 4-2. The main talking point of the match afterwards was a contentious incident involving one of Edinburgh's players being hospitalised after recieving a serious bang to the head and cut in the chin. Speedhoc once again look very strong, but with an influx of new players the Eagles could push them hard in their remaining fixtures.

The Oilers match against Chapel Chiefs followed, with a relatively comfortable 5-2 victory for the northerners. The Chiefs could find this season a bit of a struggle.

Despite Thunder's early victory they could find no answer for Speedhoc in the next game as the current Winter Cup and Play-off champions sealed an easy 7-1 win.

The only two teams from outwith Fife came up against each other in the next match as Edinburgh met Aberdeen. Having beaten Edinburgh 5 times in 5 months in the second half of last season the Oilers would have been confident going into this game. Two early goals from Aberdeen made it difficult for Edinburgh and the Oilers went on to go 6-2 up. A late rally from the Eagles brought the score back to 6-5, but with the team from the capital pushing hard for an equaliser Aberdeen exploited the space at the back to score a couple more and put the game beyond Edinburgh.

Congratulations go to Lightning for the next game, for what was their first league victory in well over a season. They defeated Chapel Chiefs 4-2 in a match which could potentially prove important in the battle to avoid finishing bottom.

The much anticipated match between last year's two dominant teams, Aberdeen and Speedhoc, lived up to expectations. It was a competitive match with an Aberdeen team significantly changed from last season coming out 4-2 victors against their title rivals.

Edinburgh Eagles were involved in a very one-sided affair in the next game, defeating Lightning 16-0. The Eagles raced into a 7-0 lead after the first period, and despite the scoring rate slowing a little, dominated the match throughout. The result was particularly satisfying for stand-in Edinburgh goalkeeper, Mateusz Masny, who managed to keep the only clean sheet of the day.

The final match of the day saw Thunder claim their second 3 points with a 7-2 win over Chiefs. The match had to be shortened to 2x20 mins due to time constraints and was a slightly dulled affair with most of the other teams having left, leaving a very empty atmosphere in the hall.

Roll-on match day 2!
