Defending champions top league table

FIPRE, Glenrothes was the venue for the 2008/9 Northern League opening series of games.  Defending champions Chapel won both their games, the first against a very strong Aberdeen Oilers and they followed this up by beating RBS Linlithgow.

Aberdeen won their second huge match of the day by overcoming Glenrothes Grrrowl 3-1 in a tense game.   Glenrothes had earlier secured a victory over Dundee Northern Lights  and thrashed a much changed Balwearie Lightning 17-0.

For Balwearie it was a difficult days floorball.  Last seasons 2nd placed team Thunder overcame Lightning in a very good game of floorball.   Thunder though then struggled and lost against Dundee Northern Lights.   Lightning ran RBS very close before losing out.

Already it appears that Chapel will be the team to beat this season.  Aberdeen Oilers and Glenrothes Grrrowl may initially appear their closest challengers.  T2 may well determine how the league will pan out across the season and key games between these clubs will have a say in the outcome.

Balwearie Thunder have alot to do to challenge this season.  As a club Balwearie were minus 15 players who had played for either Thunder or Lightning last season.  It was a miracle they managed to put two teams out in T1.

Dundee Northern Lights will be strengthened in T2 with the return of a  few players from suspension and GB duty.  On their day they can be a match for the best.

RBS Linlithgow have strengthened over the summer with some quality signings and may cause some upsets as the season progresses.

There have been a few changes over the summer to the make-up of the Northern League. Hawick have been replaced by the returning Glenrothes Grrrowl.   Glenrothes will have some Hawick based players on their roster alongside 4 players from the Czech Republic. With most of the original Glenrothes team re-joining they look to have a very strong team as they bid to reclaim the title they previously won in Season 2006/7.

Forth Phoenix however have dropped out of the league. Forth impressed many last season with some really good results and performances. However, losing players to RBS, Balwearie, Glenrothes and with others moving to other countries has meant that they don’t have enough to carry on playing. Hopefully in time the can re-build and the Phoenix can once more rise from the ashes.

Chapel last seasons league winners, will be early favourites as they have added Michael Kane and Shaun Gear to their squad.  Darren McElreath was due to sign for Chapel but due to family reasons will now be unable to play this season.  Always favourites to win the league Chapel will relish the challenge faced this season from many other strong teams.  Aberdeen Oilers will be another team who will offer a serious challenge. Last season they had an influx of experienced floorballers in their ranks and the University team will no doubt pick up more this season as they aim to build the profile of the sport in Scotland's most northern floorballing playing city.

Balwearie Thunder have lost a few and gained a few and will do very well to stay close to the very talented teams from Fife and Aberdeen.   Achieving a highest ever placing in the league last season was a great achievement for the club but it will be even tougher this season to match never mind better this placing.  Dundee will come back strong no doubt and will be aiming to finish higher than the did last season.  Dundee with their university connections may be a surprise team and on their day they are a match for anyone.

At the bottom of the league RBS Linlithgow just pipped Balwearie Lightning on the last days play last season. Lightning will be weaker this season and RBS have gained some talented players from Forth so they should avoid the wooden spoon again. Lightning are the development team from Balwearie and may have around 4 women playing their first ever league floorball for them in the months ahead.  Winning is not everything for this team as they aim to provide a platform for future floorballers.

The full list of teams for this coming season is:

Aberdeen Oilers

Balwearie Lightning

Balwearie Thunder

Chapel

Dundee Northern Lights

Glenrothes Grrrowl

Over 50 of the league's floorballers attended the second mixed fives event in FIPRE Glenrothes on sunday 14th September 2008.  Each league team had representation and it was great to see quite alot of new faces on the floorball scene.  All games were played and refereed in a friendly spirit and the sport was the real winner on the day.

Thanks go to Richie and Neil of Glenrothes for the organisation of this event.

16 Sep 2008Pink Rink Season 2008/9

Posted by ckbell63

Just wanting to inform everyone of what will be happening with ladies floorball and the “Pink Rinks” this coming season….

Some of you will already know that the plan was to build on the Pink Rinks and create a ladies “mini-league” this season. With three teams confirmed it seems we can go ahead! The dates are fixed and the plans are more or less in place. We will be running this pretty much as we did the 3rd pinkrink:

The league will be played 3 vs 3 with keeper on a 20 x 10m rink.
Games will be 2 x 15 minutes each (5 minute break)
We will have referees and scribes to keep scores/time.

The venue will be FIPRE (Glenrothes) and the dates as follows:
Round 1 - October 25th (10 – 1pm)
Round 2 - January 24th (10 – 1pm)
Round 3 - April 4th (10 – 1pm)

Cost per team will be £26 and it is up to each team to ensure they have enough players on the day (this is key for this to work out).

We will help out with finding keepers for now (men allowed :-)) but let us know at least two weeks in advance to give us time to find someone.

So, the teams so far are: Aberdeen, Balwearie and St Andrews.
If you don’t have a team yet but want to play, please get in touch with me asap and I will put you in touch with a team near you. Else if there are enough “teamless” members we can maybe get a 4th team going.

Training sessions:
Aside from the league we will also be attempting to arrange one or two ladies “training sessions” sometime during the season (possibly on a weekday night) to try and get all the ladies together for a training and to have an event to encourage along new players to try out the sport. We’ll have to wait and see what the demand is for this but I’m hoping everyone will give us a hand with spreading the word and finding some new people to bring along.

Contact:
We have created a new webpage: www.ladies.floorball.org.uk to put up news stories and upcoming events. The new email address for ladies floorball from now on will be ladies@floorball.org.uk, so please get in touch via that email if you have any queries.

I hope everyone is happy with the above plans, and I very much look forward to an exciting ladies league this season!

Cheers
Lorna

P.S. I will send out an update for Round 1 two weeks before.
