Friendly Fives
The season typically kicks off with a "friendly fives" tournament in September. The aim of this event is primarily to provide an opportunity for those players who would not normally compete in competitive matches to have a taster of what it is like playing organised matches on full size rinks. The focus is on putting on an enjoyable one-day tournament rather than on competition.
The format generally consists of a round robin tournament with relatively short games, so that people play as many different teams as possible.
Teams are selected entirely at random from all the players present on the day, regardless of club affiliation.
Competitions
The season currently consists of a one division league and usually two cup competitions. More details of the league and cup structures can be found in the relelvant sections of this site. However, below you will find more general details for competitive fixtures.
Officiating
As floorball in Scotland is still very much a minority sport we do not have any non-playing referees. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the clubs to provide officials for matches. Each club must usually be able to provide 2 referees as well as 2 scribes/timekeepers. Officiating schedules are drawn up before tournaments and sent out to the participating clubs so that all are aware just what their duties will be on the tournament day.
Ideally, referees should have some form of refereeing qualification. However, it is recognised that this is not always feasible in Scotland. Nevertheless, refereeing courses can be organised. Please contact us if you are interested.
Matches
Matches generally take the form of 3x15minutes, however these may be shortened or lengthened depending on the competition format. The timer is generally not stopped when the ball goes out of play, apart from in the final 2 minutes of the match.
Timing is often very tight at tournament days, in order to fit all matches in. Therefore, teams are expected to be ready to enter the rink as soon as the previous match is completed, with some time given to warm up on the rink prior to the match.
Logistics
Tournament dates are usually once per month, held in either Glenrothes or Dundee. These venues are chosen partly due to a lack of suitable venues, but also because they are roughly central to the competing teams.
Set-up of the rinks/halls is the responsibility of the teams. Usually, when tournaments start early in the morning, the most local teams will be charged with setting up the rink and hall ready for the day's play. Dismantling the rink following the matches is the responsibility of the final 4 teams playing on the day. At least 5 people from each of these teams is expected to stay to help out with this.
